Projects & Restoration Efforts

Michigan’s lighthouses have stood through storms, shifting shorelines, and more than a century of Great Lakes weather. Preserving them takes ongoing work — and every project brings us one step closer to protecting these historic beacons for future generations. This page highlights the restoration efforts, maintenance work, and preservation projects supported by the Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy.

Why Restoration Matters

Lighthouses are exposed to some of Michigan’s harshest conditions.
Wind, water, ice, sun, and time all play a part in structural deterioration.

Your support allows us to:

  • Repair foundations, decks, windows, and roofs

  • Repaint and protect steel and masonry

  • Restore historic lenses and equipment

  • Stabilize eroding shorelines

  • Improve safety and accessibility

  • Preserve keepers’ homes and auxiliary structures

Every project preserves a chapter of Michigan’s maritime story.

How You Can Help

Your support fuels every restoration effort — from a single artifact to an entire lighthouse structure. Ways to contribute:

  • Donate to active projects

  • Volunteer at cleanup and maintenance days

  • Sponsor a specific restoration need

  • Share our mission with family and friends

  • Partner with us for exhibits or educational outreach

Looking Ahead

There is always more work to be done. Many lighthouses still require long-term stabilization, structural reinforcement, and ongoing conservation. With your help, the Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy will continue preserving these irreplaceable landmarks one project at a time.

Current & Ongoing Projects

Structural Maintenance & Preservation

We perform essential upkeep to prevent long-term damage, including paint restoration, metal protection, window repairs, and corrosion control at historic lighthouse sites.

Artifact Restoration & Conservation

We clean, conserve, and document tools, lanterns, uniforms, and life-saving equipment to ensure these authentic maritime pieces remain preserved for future generations.

Historical Research & Documentation

We conduct archival research and create digital records to expand knowledge of lighthouse history, service practices, and the people who shaped Michigan’s maritime legacy.

Public Education & Exhibit Development

We develop exhibits, traveling displays, and outreach programs that share lighthouse history, connect communities, and support museums throughout Michigan and the Great Lakes.

Help Preserve Michigan’s Lighthouse Legacy
