Saving Michigan’s Lighthouses: A Race Against Time

Many of Michigan’s lighthouses are at risk of being lost forever. The era of the lighthouse keeper has ended, taking with it the dedicated stewards who once maintained these iconic beacons. As the U.S. Coast Guard automated the lights, maintenance and preservation efforts ceased. Without intervention, vandalism, storm damage, and decay threaten to erase these architectural treasures—and the stories of courage and service they represent. Once lost, these irreplaceable landmarks can never be rebuilt. The time to act is now.
